How to Be a Balloon Gatherer

Have you ever given someone a gift only to be given one straight back?

Or been on the receiving side and not fully taken it, just returned it?

Strange concept handing something back when it has just been given to you and yet this is what many people do with compliments.

I believe that compliments are just like balloons. Someone has taken the time to choose your favourite colour balloon, put the energy into blowing it up, done that difficult tying knot thing, they walk over to gift you the balloon/compliment and when they do, how do you respond?

There tends to be three main ways that a receiver responds when being given a compliment/balloon;

  1. Dismiss the compliment – ‘your hair looks great’ – ‘No, it’s a right mess today’
    The balloon bursts or floats away.
  2. Hand it back – ‘your hair looks great’ – ‘your hair always looks lovely’ This can actually go on for quite sometime to’ing and fro’ing after a while no-one knows who the balloon belonged to in the first place.
    The balloon gets lost.
  3. Accept with gratitude – ‘your hair looks great’ – ‘Thank you.’
    The balloon is gathered.

That’s all it takes, those two simple and effective words, ‘Thank you’.  The giver is happy and you get to become a balloon gatherer.

Happy Gathering!
